Salk Institute San Diego
A Contemplative Space for the Mind
“Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality”.
Dr. Jonas Salk
The courtyard of the Salk Institute in La Jolla – designed by Louis Kahn and inaugurated in 1965 – is a space of clarity and focus.
A broad, precisely structured expanse, framed by two symmetrical buildings, draws the gaze unhindered toward the horizon and a
narrow channel of water highlights the axis and carries the view out to the Pacific.
For me, this water embodies the constant movement of thought and development – in a place free of distraction and excess, built to honor the mind.
